Jake Arrieta threw 248.1 innings in 2015,
he had never thrown more than 156.2 in any other season (2014)
The 2015 season is officially over but for some pitchers the ache in their arms from throwing a lot of innings remains. In some cases, it’s not the number of innings pitched, number of pitches thrown, or the number of stressful pitches thrown, for many pitchers, young or old, in 2015 they simply threw more innings than they have ever thrown before.
Then there are those pitchers who were fortunate enough to pitch in the postseason. As Tyler Kepner wrote in the New York Times, Mets manager Terry Collins is acutely aware of the impact the postseason may have on his young pitchers, “This is going to be a short off-season for a lot of them,” Collins said. “They pitched more innings than they ever have, so my concern is what they’re going to be like when they show up at spring training. When are those arms going to bounce back?”
While we look at a pitcher’s inning totals, most frequently we look at just their regular season totals, but while postseason innings don’t count in looking at individual career totals, they do count on a pitcher’s arm.
This season, including the postseason, there were 32 pitchers who threw over 200 innings, down from the 41 in both 2013 and 2014, the 39 in 2012, and the 45 in 2011.
Here are the 10 who who threw at least 225 innings in 2015.
Only Max Scherzer did not pitch in the postseason.
